The Hancock Family – A Legacy of Stewardship in Florida
The Hancock Family migrated south from Georgia and settled in what is now Pasco County in 1837. In 2002 the Florida Department of Ag and Consumer Services designated the Hancock’s farm a Century Pioneer Family Farm, this designation honors families who have maintained, at minimum, 100 years of continuous family farm ownership.
This program recognizes these pioneers as the original stewards of the land for preserving environmental resources and for helping the state’s agricultural industries. The continued agricultural and silvicultural production for over a century is a testament to the commitment Jimmy and his family have to the land, the environment, and the industry.
The family’s motto over the last 150 years has been. “In order for the land to take care of you, you have to take care of the land.” Maintaining a balance with the ecosystem, native wildlife and agricultural production starts and ends with respect for the land itself.
For Seven generations an emphasis has always been placed on ensuring the next generation has the ability to farm and protect the same land as the previous. Jimmy Hancock, the managing partner of Trailhead, and his partners continue the legacy of stewardship in Florida today that the Hancock family started over 150 years ago in Florida.
